5 Most Haunted Places in Assam 2025

When I was young I used to spend a lot of time after school with my grandma listening to her ghost stories from Assam. My passion for exploring unusual places on the planet led me to undertake the tempting journey to Assam's legendary sites and haunted locations.

From the rustling of the winds to untraceable shadows, my journey through Assam’s five most haunted places was both suspenseful and spooky at the same time.

Before selecting these spooky places I learned myths, interviewed villagers and even ventured to all of these haunted locations in Assam myself.

Assam Beyond Tea and Silk: Place of Mystery and Hauntings

Assam is popular for Kaji Nemu (Assam lemon), verdant tea gardens and golden muga silk. But beyond its beauty, it has a haunting record as one of the supernatural sites of India. Apart from the must-visit temples across this land, the region has some haunted places with tales of paranormal and unexplainable mysteries as well.

How to Identify Haunted Places in Assam

Before I start with the haunted locations I would like to go into some signs that show a location to be spooky and haunted:
    • The faint sounds of people speaking as well as footsteps when you are certain you are the only person around.
    • Tales of people committing suicide, dark magic or the bizarre stories of people who simply for some reason never show back up.
    • Stories that we hear from our elders or people nearby are far more terrifying than some creative fiction.
Well now you've grasped the knowledge of finding a haunted place, let's now go through to the most haunted places in Assam.

    1. Jatinga: The Birds Suicidal Region

A Jatunga bird falls onto the road near Jatinga village representing the mysterious bird suicide occurrences in the area.

It is well-known that humans sometimes take their own lives under pressure or difficult circumstances. But can you believe that thousands of birds died by suicide at Jatinga a picturesque village near Haflong?

This is happening every year from September to November from 6 PM to 9 PM and mostly on moonless (Amabashya) nights. It appeared that an invisible force mesmerized the birds, making them forget their flying direction.

The mystery gets deeper as rare species such as tiger bittern, green pigeon and kingfisher show the same strange death patterns. Such bizarre occurrences have made Jatinga one of the most unsettling supernatural locations in India.

Jatinga’s Dark Past: The Curse of the Falling Birds

To understand this paranormal phenomenon in Assam we would have to turn our attention to its history.

The Zeme Nagas were the first known inhabitants of Jatinga in 1890. They observed flocks of birds falling into their campfires and, terrified by the belief that these were spirits descending from the sky, fled the village.

Years later, in 1905 the Jaintias moved to Jatinga and they were also amazed to discover this phenomenon when they went at night into the forests with torches of fire. Unlike the Nagas, the Jaintias felt this was a blessing from god and an easier way to collect the birds for food.

However, even with all of the briefing and research, no scientist or bird author produced one concrete rationale behind their existence. Famous Indian ornithologist Salim Ali wrote these birds might be disoriented while flying in their sleep.

My Chilling Experience in Jatinga Village

When I arrived at Jatinga, there was a strange supernatural breeze in the air.

After talking to villagers, I found out that this ghostly phenomenon happens only in a small place. In this single domain, birds fly into trees, houses and lampposts and die.

I held my breath as I watched the dead bird effortlessly glide through the air, its tiny body still fluttering weakly. But why during these months and times? If the mist is to blame, then why don’t similar incidents happen in December and January, when the mist is even denser?

The villagers still hold onto a chilling tale passed down by a Jaintia leader who died in 2000. According to him, three Zeme Naga women were burned alive for practicing black magic—each on a different moonless night in October and November. Many believe their restless spirits haunt Jatinga luring the birds to their deaths.

I could feel the eerie energy that the locals spoke of. Thus, in Jatinga the night brings with it a unique sense of being watched-not by humans but by something invisible.

    2. Mayong: Unveiling India’s Last Surviving Black Magic Village

We usually imagine witches as something from films such as Harry Potter. But the truth is India also has its own base of witchcraft in Mayong village where even to this day, ancient rituals are performed.

Mayong is the only surviving village of black magic in India situated 55 kilometers away from Guwahati City. The name Mayong is preassumed to be derived from the Sanskrit term Maya which signifies "illusion".

According to legend, ancient Tantriks, Ojas, and female sorcerers could cast people as animals with one spell. In Mayong, the vanishing of people is not something rare to happen. In 1330, Mohammed Shah and his army reportedly vanished here without a trace.

My Visit to the Land of Illusion: Mayong

A few weeks ago in Morigaon, freakishly curious, I thought to go to Mayong, a village cloaked in the mystery of age-old spells. As I went deeper into the village the air thickened with something I could not shake.

I was fortunate enough to meet Shri Tilak Hazarika who was engaged in Tantra. I felt the hair in my neck stand up knowing that Mayong's spells are not written and are passed down orally from one generation to another.

What we see today—travelers from Kolkata and Delhi visiting Mayong for spiritual healing—is just the surface. The real black magic is secret, hidden behind an invisible force in the heart of Mayong, but unobserved by travelers.

The Museum of Mayong consists of haunted relics, records of spells of ancient times and ritual weapons and they are considered a witness to its wicked past. But if you visit Mayong you already will have a sense of panoramic activities at night.

    3. Jorhat Gymkhana Club: Haunted Colonial Club

Next is Jorhat, a city in Assam that people from Assam are proud of, for its cultural heritage. It is the city that is very often called the 'Tea capital of India'. The distance from Gùwahati to Jorhat is 304 kilometers, it was the last capital of the Ahom kingdom.

Besides all that grandeur in monuments and places was Jorhat Gymkhana Club commenced during the British era which is pretty interesting.

A large white house with a fence and green lawn reminiscent of Jorhat Gymkhana evoking a haunted colonial atmosphere.

Jorhat Gymkhana Club, the typically watched spot in Assam, built by D. Simmons in 1876 amid the British control. Usually closed to the public, my uncle got us an invitation.

The Jorhat Club is a fairly standard colonial edifice which, in fact, is a timber frame-show and paneling beneath a corrugated iron roof.
The scene at Jorhat Gymkhana Club has come to light with stunning events. Even a news channel backed this story with its odd and unexplained events.

Residents in the locality used to imagine a small group participating in various mysterious rituals and black magic at this club. The story goes that after a ritual that did not go according to plan, the club was left in disuse and ever since eerie noises and mysterious symbols have haunted the club.

Is there any paranormal activity in the Jorhat Gymkhana Club or is it a myth? Nevertheless I invite you to visit this town of Jorhat one of the paranormal locations in Assam and see for yourself.

    4. Sundarbari Cemetery: The Haunted Kabristan

Being a Guwahati native, the gateway to the Northeastern states of India. The city is holy for me, it boasts the finest infrastructure and there are many mystical temples like Kamakhya Temple, it also has many haunted sites.

Out of the numerous haunted places Sundarbari Cemetery in Jalukbari is one of the ghostly places in Assam.

Here you have paranormal all around with a ghostly story stating that dead things come alive at night. It is situated around 13 kilometers from Guwahati City.

    My Experience at Sundarbari Kabristan

Together with a friend, we set out for the Sundarbari Cemetery during the day the intention always being to decode its mysteries. The narrow muddy path that leads to the cemetery was very quiet and isolating making it truly creepy. When we reached the cemetery an overwhelming sense of unease made it difficult for me to step inside.

We also found out from Abdul Aziz one of the caretakers that people often see ghosts around the cemetery. He even recalled an instance when a drunk man wandered into the cemetery one night and was never found. We soon departed the cemetery but with a scary feeling for some time.

    5. Bogijuli Camp: Haunted Camping Site

Last but not least, your wait is over here in this paragraph, I am going to share with you one of the lesser-known paranormal sites in Assam-Bogijuli Camping Site in Nameri Forest Reserve.

Nameri is a paradise for nature lovers, home to Sloth Bear, Leopard, Sambhar and as part of this reserve is the second tiger reserve of Assam. In the Nameri forest, the Jia Bhoroli River is the lifeline and the bird life there is nothing less than spectacular with over 300 species already recorded.

An Unusual Evening at Bogijuli Camp

I visited Bogijuli at a distance of 28 kilometers from Rangapara to experience some creepy things. I felt overwhelmed in a thick atmosphere where the trees were oversized and cast creepy, long shadows. As I stood in the eerie silence at Bogijuli Camp, I felt nature was holding its breath.

A local guide described terrifying stories about the haunted history of the camp to me. When night falls, anguished cries of a woman are said to echo in the trees, windows are slammed, and footsteps follow around this deserted camp as if unseen figures roamed the grounds. Sounds of bamboo trees falling are also heard. But when someone dares to check the place out, an unnaturally stifling silence takes over.

While there is no conclusive evidence showing Bogijuli Camp is indeed haunted, if we are to go only by vibes, one could easily believe otherwise.

India has many haunted railway stations, and every one of them has a scary story. Out of the options, the railway station that scares the most is the Begunkodor Railway Station near Purulia district in West Bengal, as people have reported seeing a woman standing in the platform and disappear suddenly at midnight. Many people say that Barog Station, Shilma is the second most haunted, as it is said that passengers can sense an odd feeling as the train moves into the tunnel. Kuldhara Village, which is sometimes called the "Ghost Village of India", about 17 kilometers west of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is my top pick. Salim Singh tried to marry the village head’s daughter, but before leaving, the Brahmins cursed him, saying nobody would be able to spend the night in the village. Dow Hill, located near Kurseong and Darjeeling, is the next haunted place we hear about, and there are many stories of a headless boy seen nearby Victoria Boys’ High School and on a road named ‘Death Road’.
